Free-to-air television is much less painful to watch when your Personal Video Recorder automatically skips the ad breaks.
Advertisements are a necessary evil of the free-to-air broadcasting model, but that doesn’t mean that you have to sit through every ad break. Rather than just fast-forwarding through the ads, some PVRs feature a “skip” button which jumps forward in 30-second increments so you can get straight back to watching your recorded program.
IceTV’s $499 Skippa video recorder goes one step further by automatically skipping the entire ad break without you needing to lift a finger. You can be sure it will upset broadcasters, but IceTV is confident it can fend off any legal challenge.
Six years ago IceTV won a David and Goliath legal battle with the Nine Network over the rights to the weekly broadcast schedule. IceTV’s online TV guide is compatible with a range of PVRs from the likes of Humax, Topfield and Beyonwiz, along with computer-based recorders such as Window Media Centre and Elgato.
