Bill to split Telstra passes Parliament

The first piece of legislation needed to build the National Broadband Network has passed both houses of Parliament.

A bill allowing Telstra to structurally separate officially passed through Parliament today with the House of Representatives approving the Senate’s amendments about 2.15pm today.

After an hour and a half of debate the amendments were approved by the lower house. After months of debate on such an important bill the final vote was a whimper – there was no division and a cry of “ayes” was sufficient.
